Course content Analytical approach to urban space. Urban space structure in relation to economic and social parameters: city, region, urban units, urban functions, city centres. The urban grid. Public and private space. Processes and types of urban development. Issues of property ownership and land value in Greece. The planning concept. Spatial planning in Greece. Greater Athens. Introduction to urban analysis. Main targets of the module “Urban planning and Analytical Approach to Urban Space” which constitutes the introductory module of the course in urban-planning modules of the School of Architecture of NTUA are: • The understanding of the city as a complex social phenomenon and the detection of the factors which organize life and its transformations. • Introduction to urban-planning’s object and the history of urban-planning, laying emphasis on Greece. • Familiarization with the analysis techniques of the urban space as well as the urban-planning scales. (1:25.000-1:1.000), symbolisms and in general the language of urban-planning designs.
