Title: SPACE – SOCIETY: A contribution to the process of regional development of the island of Cyprus

The practical application of Cyprus’ regional and urban planning lacks consistent scientific research and study.  This study argues that the main cause for this, is the young age of the Republic of Cyprus, the political problem which existed from the foundation of the Republic and the Turkish invasion of ’74 which divided the island into two parts.

This study attempts to approach the present development problems of Cyprus through a social and sensitive approach.  From this point of view the status quo in Cyprus at the moment imposes that we approach the islands’ socio-economic and spatial problems through a methodology that threats the island as a whole unity.  That is, we are not exclusively concerned only with the unoccupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus but with the whole island.  Therefore, we consider the persistent 30years division of the island as the major socio-economic and developmental problem.  Therefore the main goal of this study is to explore methodologies to restore the lost spatial and social cohesion of the island by stating, from the beginning, the political issue reversed: that is, the objective is not how we can achieve economic development and cohesion after solving the political problem, but how it is possible to approach the solution of the political problem through the developmental processing.
