“RAILWAY STATION IN ACHARNES_ on an orbit of movement” BAKOPANOU STAVROULA

The suburban railway station of Acharnes (Menidi) on the line Athens – Chalkis, is confronting the matter of incontinuity, that arouses from the railroad lines, which are a case of what might be called a fragmentary edge, a visible boundary between two suburban areas of similar characteristics. The diminishing of the railway lines creates the conditions for converting the impenetrable edge to a uniting seam.

The existing early twentieth century buildings undertake new functions, such as a library and a computer laboratory, that contribute to the cultural dynamics of the area. The new building of the railway station is in a constant dialog with the stone buildings, as it is directed towards them.

The form of the station reflects the diagram of movements and circulation, as well as the functions diagram. The main station has a rigid square shape of plan, while the secondary functions of the waiting area and the restaurant-cafι, seem to be “produced” by the basic functional area, both in form – following a fluid design – and in planning arrangement – as the movement is strictly directed through the main station area. This basic characteristic emphasizes on the fact that the complementary functions would not have reason to exist without the function of the railway station, but simultaneously their intense presence is indicative of their necessity towards a complete organizing and functioning of the public space.
