"An urban tissue in relation to the water environment, the exemple of Messologgi" Andreas Karavanas

The object of this research is the examination of the borderlined areas, where a constituted urban area coexists with the natural water environment.

Nowdays that the relation between natural and civilized is crucial, contemporary cities are trying to find natural ways through and water appears as the precious primary element, which is attempted to be exploited.

In the research there is a reference to the evolution of the Dutch polders and of three cities (Amsterdam, Tokyo and Venice) as well as their relation with water.

An equivalent example that is given from Greece, is the city of Messolonghi. There is a mention to the historical evolution of the urban tissue in relation to the water environment and the continuous mutations of the eco-systems.

Through an attempt of accessing Messolonghi in the international course, several contemporary models of urban development are presented.

Finally, several proposals for Messolonghi, are outlined, based on the abolition of the spatial “non-continued”, which is today presented between the city’s urban tissue and its water environment.
