Avlonari is located north of Aliveri and west of Kimi, in the central part of Evia Island. It is a very rich and fertile region of Evia. Agios Dimitrios church in Avlonari or Chania Avlonariou, the capital of the municipality of Avlona, has three known constructural phases. The church was built on the ruins of an ancient temple of Apollonas. The main church is dedicated to Agios Dimitrios and also has two sections each one of them is dedicated to Agia Thekla and Agia Foteini. Agios Dimitrios Avlonariou has always been a holy place for people to visit. The architectural style of this Byzantine church is a cross-roofed, type A1 church (A.Orlandos). It is decorated by impressive Byzantine wall paintings (frescos) of the end of the 13th century. The most characteristic fresco is Archangels Michael on the north wall of the main part of the church, which size is enormous. It is said that this Byzantine church was the most important in the whole region of central Evia Island until the 15th century.
