"Landscape architecture, landscape-buildings inside the area of the city" Polyzogopoulou Louiza

CENTRAL LIBRARY OF TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF DELFT (Mecanoo Architects)

INTERNATIONAL PORT TERMINAL OF YOKOHAMA (Foreign Office Architects)

Nowadays, a big quantity of the population lives in cities. However, in contemporary architecture is a tendency of “returning” back to nature. There are buildings which enact nature with artificial means. Their feature is that they try to imitate the qualities of natural landscape without misleading for their artificial origin.

Excuse of this study, was my personal experience of two of the most characteristic buildings of this category: The Central Library of the Technical University of Delft (Mecanoo Architects) and the International Port Terminal of Yokohama (Foreign Office Architects). The thing that captured my attention to occupy myself with this specific matter is the sense you carry off the place and the familiarity with which you understand the landscape around you.

The lecture -before the analysis of these two buildings- speaks about the relationship of architecture with landscape and in the same time introduces some more examples of landscape-buildings, which are placed inside the area of the city.

In the end, there is a comparison of these two buildings, which leads to conclusions about the quality of landscape architecture in the contemporary world.
