"The transformation of industrial places in Europe and the case of emery mines of Naxos" Anastasia Gkotinou - Maria Loukma

The work is separated in 4 chapters: the 1st one is reported in emery mines of Naxos, the 2nd in the excavation as European heritage and analytically for France, Britain and Germany. In the 3rd chapter are analyzed the conclusions to which we led for the industrial heritage to the European countries and comparison with emery mines of Naxos and finally there is an annex with cards of material that we retrieved and studied from the Internet.

Object of this study is the transformation of abandoned or active mines and industrial places in tourist attractions.

Reason for this choice constituted our diplomatic work on the subject of the exploitation of the emery mines in the region Naxos. Their current picture composes the peculiar geographic environment and the human interventions. Through the observation of cases from the European space, focusing in France, Britain and Germany, objective is the comprehension of interventions and problems of old industrial places. All the three of them used to be big industrial countries, where the deindustrialization, phenomenon that characterizes the productive developments in Europe, constitutes the cause of desolation of industrial regions, as well as the increase of the unemployment level.

The basic reason for the maintenance of industrial remains is assemble the interest of public in these spaces, which is a world no long chronologically but conceptually as distant as the distant past. The mining industry created landscapes with particular identity that today functions as parks with background, cultural, environmental or technological character.
