Τhe application of artificial exterior illumination of a city’s different elements is an essential standard for the continuation of life and of different human activities during nightfall hours and helps towards the indication of the city, its landmarks and political inheritance, its present culture together with its unique personality. The illuminated elements consist of mainly buildings and urban open spaces –such as squares, parks, gardens, water element and bridges.

Artificial lighting works as a mean of psychological influence for the observer and can create both pleasant and unpleasant feelings. It works as an element of recognition of identity for the building or its surrounding outdoor areas, the indication of its aesthetical quality and its architectural worthiness, its purpose and role within the city, the orientation together with the wellbeing of the citizens.

The designing of artificial external lighting is a combination of art, science and technology, based on several criteria in respect to quantity and quality - aesthetic the selection and hierarchy of which give various results.

Encountering the issue of light pollution, the external lighting of buildings together with that of open spaces, can be both economical and environmentally friendly and may simultaneously perform desirable, practical and aesthetical results, providing that there is a good preliminary study and that the proper utilisation of technology has been undertaken.
