"Central residential areas of Athens, procedures of development – potentials of evolution" Stayros Papazoglou

The postwar rebuilding of the Greek cities comprises a particular example of urban development with many-sided results. Trying to conceive the procedures and the particularity of the Greek postwar development, and in continue, to find solutions to the problems of the densely-populated parts of them, contributes to the improvement of their living conditions. The rehabilitation of the problematic territories is considered to be a complexed problem, which is related with urban planning and architecture, and affects and is affected from all the political and social conditions.

In this project are being described the peculiar procedures of the postwar development  of the Greek cities, and especially of Athens, considering her as a representative example, which assigned the future of the rest. In continue are being described the consequences, focusing on the deficiency on free spaces for the socialization of the residents and the argumentary of spaces, such as terraces, free sites, as well as public spaces. In the end are mentioned the current changes of the Greek political and social conditions which affect the urban space, aiming to realize the intentions and tendencies, that are being formed for the confrontation of the problems.

The project is based on the thoughts, which came up after a diploma work with the name “Rehabilitation of the blocks of houses of Kipseli”, which was treating the design of the unbouilt  area in the center of a square in Kipseli in order to create a space, where the residents of the square could socialize.
