"Digitalization of architectural boundaries" Antonis Kolsouzoglou

Digital representation offers a new means at architect’s disposal, capable of representing his concepts as is being done with the use of other means for centuries (triplet “archetype – means – representation”). However, this new means makes possible the digitalization of architectural boundaries. As a result it is possible to fuse physical and digital (virtual) spaces creating what is called mixed reality. Mixed reality has been a fact that architect has to take into consideration, so that he can make the user be inhabitant, acclimatising him into his new surroundings.

Mixed reality constitutes the fusion of physical and digital (virtual) spaces through the representation of one space into the other and vice versa. As far as topology is concerned, there are two main categories: either physical and digital (virtual) spaces can be directly overlaid or physical and digital (virtual) spaces can be linked but separate. Topology of mixed reality spaces, is quite flexible and easy to create or remove new connections with other spaces. That is why mixed reality architecture is usually being described as “liquid architecture”.
