"The spatial experience of the metro" Anastasia Stamouli - Vasilis Kitsos

Reading the changes in the modern metropolis we began with its passage from the post-industrial era to the information age: reformation of productive process with new technologies and network structures that support its development.

For us, the network can be defined as the overarching parameter that plays and will continue to play in the next years, a decisive role in the way the economy develops.  It will influence social relations and behaviours, as well as spatial expressions of all these.

In the example of the underground, a material network space, we located also characteristics of heterotopias of spectacle, memory, consumption and the obedience of the social body. It is a closed space, with explicit limits that differentiate it from the outside world, while simultaneously rendering it accessible. It is therefore both clearly defined and controllable.

New types of human relations, both between individuals and between them and the city, are clearly reflected in the space of the underground.

The underground features equally in the process of social engineering. It is a transmitter of values and determines the identity not only of the city, but also of its residents. It is the field most suited to the development of new social practices, according to the givens of the networked, information society. v
