"What is a Museum?" Chiou Dimitra

What is museum? Museum  is a permanent institution, without speculative character, in the service of society and her growth, open in the public, which acquires, maintains, research, notifies and mainly exposes material testimonies of person and his environment aiming at the study, the education and the entertainment. The antiquity  was named  the temple Monsoon. A place that is to say where remained the Muses, his girls Jeus and the Mnimosy'nis and at extension each place that was found under their protection.


The museum develops, the known museum in the antiquity of was Ptolemajoy of Savior in Alexandria the 3o  century p.H.. The Roman period the museum is reported mainly in space for philosophical discussions. In the Rebirth are presented the beginnings of modern museum. The term of museum is used in Firenze the 15o  century. The 16o  and 17o  century in Europe are developed the showcases of objects. At the 18o   century we have the spread of scientific methods for the classification and study of collections, the 19o  they are created museums of folklore, ethnography and local history. In our days the museum shows particular interest for the way of presentation and interpretation, recognizing that the communication is one from his most important operations. 


The development of museums in Greece begins with the foundation of Greek state, and is connected with the protection of antiquities. The first museum was the National Museum of Aegina 1829. In the dues of the 19o  century is recognized the role of Byzantine and newer period, as the intermediary interval that connects historical and cultural the antiquity with modern Greece. The 20o  century we have big blossoming in archaeological museums, folklore, museums of historical interest, naval and in Byzantines. Particular blossoming the last decades they know the museums of work of newer art and the opening of Greek museums to the public it takes mainly the form of educational programs.


After all this study a museum in order to he is functional and ideal, it will be supposed it can cope with the daily needs of modern citizen-visitor. The spaces of museum they are rightly organised in order that the visitor draws information, concrete elements, he studies tendencies, developments, structures, applications and he has the possibility him of analyzing and him of evaluating. Still, in the better case, himself the visitor it affects with his presence and it leaves his personal seal in the space of museum.
