"Architectural parts and monuments…refugees in archeological museums" Sepeta Petroula Christina, Chamilou Ioanna

Architectural work is impressed by many elements of life -social, religious, aesthetical and technological- that can constitute the complete image of the time it represents. Nevertheless, can it find its space in the narrow space of a Museum? If yes, under which conditions and which terms?

The museums we analyze are known Museums for exhibiting architectural parts and monuments. These are: Metropolitan Museum in New York, Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Ephesus Museum in Vienna, British Museum in London and Acropolis Museum in Athens. And then we mention the archaeological spaces of the Temple of Epicures Apollo and the settlement in the Akrotiri in Santorini.

This lecture is about the relation between Museum and architectural member or monument from antiquity. We seek the conditions under which an architectural part is transported in a compact museum-shell and how “place” remains an integral element of its substance. And finally if it is better the museum-shell to surround the place and not the architectural part or the monument separately, in order to achieve a complete architectural creation.
