"The wooden buildings of Normand" Ioanna Smirou

The most enchanting and powerful element of city of Rouen they are buildings `pan de bois', that we will try to translate them as wooden or ‘timber frame’ buildings. This wooden structural system is constituted by the base, the main structural organism, the secondary structural organism and the material of fulfillment that all together achieve the receipt of vertical charges and the rigidity of building.

The researchers locate three systems of manufacture `pan de bois' that also chronologically the one is development of other. First is characterized from united beddings by the base as the side of roof, the  second from interrupted beddings in the height of each floor and the third one from the penetration of the traverse beams in the beddings. The wooden structural system began as a constructional technique absolutely compatible and harmonized in the environment and in the climate, then progressively developed reaching the 15th century in the perfection of carpentry.

It began to lose its liveliness at the Renaissance, and the timber frame  which was visible then covered by moreover woodcut decor in order to it extinguishes the 17th and 18th century. The import of stone and the tendencies that it imposed the fashion were its mainer enemies; characteristic example the plastered wooden structural system that tries it imitates the beginnings of stone. At an early date however it will recover its old glamour with an exaggeration, we pass from the structure in the picture of structure, that is to say maintaining only his picture.

These wooden buildings beyond their exterior picture allocate an even structural system where they have been solved consequently, methodically the all building and static problems but the maintenance of entire building and not only the scene-painted aspects, with modern methods of repair that are compatible, it is the continuation of the essential step for the protection of historical heritage of city and of wooden manufacture that might absorb the new operations and needs.
