"The public railway transportation & the sustainable reorganization of Athens" Katsi Stella, Kapsopoulou Christodouli

The primary focus of this paper was to provide a brief but informative survey of the development of significant metropolitan areas and the challenges they confront in order to improve the quality of life, concentrating on the contribution of the public railway transportation.

In Chapters 1 and 2 we analyze concepts relative to sustainability in the urban space, viable mobility, city planning orientated to the public transportation, land use etc.  For the better comprehension of the interdependence between these systems, we present specific examples of European and American cities (Vienna, Glasgow, San Francisco, Atlanta, Toronto, Austerlitz station in Paris).

In Chapters 3 and 4 we refer to the Greek reality, especially to the spatial and environmental challenges that the city of Athens confronts, as well as to the necessity of an integrated transport system.  Moreover, we give a brief description of the features of the railway networks of the city (metro, tram, suburban railway).

Emphasis is given to the significance and the impact of the function of the metro stations.  The facts that we present are supported by the results of our personal study - research concerning three metro stations:

§                           Faliro (connection with tram),

§                           Monastiraki (connection of Line 1 with Line 3),

§                           Neratziotissa (connection with suburban railway).
