Course C: Music and architectural correspondences: «counterpoint»as a music and architectural tool

Course content

In this module we are trying to look at architectural synthesis through a common –and old- music path. We borrow from the latter tested and practised notions and equivalent terms and rules, which it has always used and evolved as synthetic tools as it evolves through time. We are attempting to find out whether and how these notions, terms and rules are equivalent to architecture. Whether and how we can make our art much better.
A research of the relation between architecture and music will be conducted through a methodological synthetic tool that is the counterpoint, the synthesis technique of a polyphonic music phrase into parts which include a specific order. Counterpoint allows to the one who is familiar with to mix two or more tunes in a way to be heard simultaneously. It appears to be the most characteristic element of western music and one of the most important features which contradistinguishes it from the eastern music. This is considered to be one of the main means for those who desire to compose.

The issues involved in the relation between architecture and music have their roots in Greek Mythology. Since then the way that architects, artists and musicians have appreciated this relation has changed. So, since the era of harmonious proportions and linings we went through to apprehensible proportions and later to discovering the relations into a deeper structural level. The module is placed in contemporary questioning in a structural and methodological proportion of these two arts and focuses on the way that counterpoint technique is transferred to architectural synthesis presenting, at the same time, equivalent attempts of transcription to art.

The module is a combination of speech (introductions), musical hearings (music played) and assessments. The first assessments have the character of admission and registration of notions and counterpoint techniques which were implemented in architectural projects – built or designed- and the last assessment is organized into small abstract syntheses where counterpoint techniques are implemented and theoretical knowledge is utilized.
