Laboratory of Spatial Planning and Geographic Information Systems

Scientific field and Objectives

The Laboratory of Spatial Planning and Geographic Information Systems is included in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of the School of Architecture of NTUA.
It was founded in July 1996 with first Director the Professor D. Georgoulis, whose contribution was decisive in the development of the Laboratory as well as in its work in education and research up to 2006. Since 2007 the direction was undertaken by M. Angelidis, Professor of NTUA.

Scientific objects of the Laboratory are Spatial Planning and Geographic Information Systems and more specifically:
- the analysis of the territorial economic and social development and of the spatial networks at european, national and regional level as well as in cities.
- the evaluation of policies of regional, spatial and urban development as well as environmental protection.
- the more specific relation of spatial planning with regional and urban environmental planning towards sustainable development
- the development of indicators and models in spatial and environmental analysis and policy evaluation in relation with the digital organisation of relational data bases for the European space as well as the Greek regions and cities
- the development of applications of Geographic Information Systems in Spatial, Urban, and Environmental Planning.

Laboratory objectives
- Support of the educational needs of NTUA on undergraduate and postgraduate level
- Development of research programs in its scientific fields (cf. above)
- Collaboration in any form with research centres and academic institutions of Greece and abroad, provided that the scientific objectives are common with or complementary to those of the Laboratory
- Organisation of scientific lectures, meetings, seminars, conferences, congresses and other scientific events
- Realisation of scientific publications and editions and the invitation of Greek and foreign scientists
- Collaboration with relative public services, local authorities and other scientific and social institutions
- Provision of services to individuals to any legal form of organisation according to the Greek legislation.

The Laboratory’s facilities can be used by undergraduate and postgraduate students, candidate doctors, NTUA Staff members, members of other institutions of the third level education, as well as by external researchers.
